Potions lab floor

The bottom floor of the Harry Potter cabinet will house the Potions lab. From my grandfather who was a carpenter, I am using leftover edgetrim. This is what you would put on the side of a cabinet or table.

Here I have cut into 2 inch lengths. The finish is quite shiny, so some fine sandpaper has taken some of it off.

Because there wasn't enough, the rest of the "slate" tiles will be made with cardstock and different mediums mixed with a very dark grey paint.
Here is my experiment board.

I tried all mediums that I had.

The clear winner was glue, modeling paste and paint.

Now on to production! It was applied with a spatula and this gave the effect of real rock.

Starting with the front, glueing on the tiles.

Glueing with contact cement and clamping the edgetrim down.

 Here is the finished floor

Wish I had put the tiles in a more random way, but as the floor will be covered with potion ingredients and worktables, it really won't stand out anyway.

Very excited about making the potion ingredients in tiny bottles!
