My first Harry Potter miniature project was to make the inside of the Hogwarts Express that Harry shared with Ron in the first book. I would like to share with you the steps of making the suitcases. There was a lot of experimenting. My silhouette cameo helps to get the size right and make a pattern.
Here I made 3 leather suitcases and one wooden suitcase.
The inside was fun to design.
The first wooden suitcase.
Here is the suitcase template. There are a lot of changes but I keep getting closer
to achieving what is in my mind's eye.
Making tops and bottoms with wood.
Staining the suitcase.
There were many things I tried to use for the straps - leather, string, paper, even clay. At Michaels, I found a leather cord that worked.I used rubber cement to glue it to the suitcase.
The hinges were easy to buy, but not easy to attach. They come with little screws, but fearing the wood splitting, they are glued on. Super glue didn't work. E6000 did.
The tiny little locks were cut out of cardstock with my silhouette cameo. The little pieces are glued and layered for dimension and strength. Some are painted with a metallic paint and some of the top layers are cut with a metallic looking vinyl or cardstock.
The silver cardstock make the locks look good.
The handles were easy. Paper templates are glued to leather and cut out.
Doesn't the handle look authentic?
Gold cardstock to look like metal handle tabs.
Silver cardstock.
These will be the Ron Weasley suitcases. I am making two as one will go for the Hogwarts Express, and the other will go in the dorm room in the tower project in the future.
A simple hogwarts crest is printed and glued on top.
Finishing touches - corner bumpers cut with adhesive vinyl.
These are Fred and George Weasley's suitcases.
Here two suitcases are placed in the scene with Hedwig and her travel cage.
Here is a suitcase filled with items to go to school.
